Have you ever turned on Spotify, put your headphones in… and nothing? If so, then you know how annoying it can be. And that's exactly what millions of people experienced on April 16, 2025, whether at home, at work, or on public transportation. The music simply stopped. And what was perhaps the scariest thing? No one knew why.

The outage that surprised the whole world

According to Downdetector data, the first reports of the outage started appearing around 14:20 CET. Within a few minutes, there were tens of thousands of them. And it wasn't just Europe; Spotify was also down in the US, Canada, South America, and Asia. Some people couldn't log in, others couldn't load playlists, and others couldn't play music at all.

Fortunately, Spotify did not remain silent. Shortly after the outage began, Spotify's official account on the X network (formerly Twitter) said: "We are aware of the issue, we are working to resolve it. Thank you for your patience." They also assured that this was not a hacker attack, although panic scenarios quickly spread on the Internet.

As usual, Twitter, TikTok, and Reddit were flooded with jokes, memes, and even outright despair. People wrote that they couldn't function without music. One user aptly noted: "Spotify went down and with it my productivity."For many, music is not only a backdrop, but also a way to deal with stress, and when it suddenly disappears, it's noticeable.

Spotify has not yet provided detailed technical reasons for the service's outage. However, it has confirmed that it was an internal technical issue. No outside interference, no attack. In short, just a digital glitch that can happen to even the biggest players in the industry.

The outage lasted about four hours. By around 18 p.m., most users were reporting that Spotify was working again. For those who still haven't, Spotify recommended restarting the app or clearing the cache.
