It usually pays to have a smartwatch and a mobile phone from the same manufacturer. They work in the same ecosystem and support the same features, so they are much more integrated than if you have, say, a Pixel Watch and a Samsung Galaxy. But sometimes a manufacturer takes a rather strange step that disrupts this connection and simple communication. Which is now the case with Google. It decided to deprive its Pixel Watch of one popular feature that significantly connected it to Pixel phones.
The connection between Pixels a Pixel Watch remains. So you can rest assured. But according to Android Authority, Google is working to limit the feature that allowed unlock your phone using your smartwatchIt was enough (or still is enough) to have a Pixel Watch on your wrist, and your Google Pixel You didn't have to manually unlock it - Pixel Watch did it for you.
But Google has apparently realized that this great feature is not secure at all. All it takes is for someone to gain access to your Pixel Watch, and suddenly it will reach the entire content of your mobile. Thanks to them, you don't have to enter a PIN or authenticate using biometric dataWhich can be very dangerous if both devices are stolen, for example. Or it can be abused by a partner or dishonest friend of the user in question.
That's why Google plans to severely limit this unique feature. Assuming you have the security feature turned on on your Pixel phone Advanced Protection Mode (AAPM), there will be no tool Watch Unlock available. Thanks to this advanced option introduced in Android 16, all security features in the system and in Google applications are automatically enabled.
Clear evidence of this decision was discovered in Google Play Services v25.49.31 betaIt's not clear from the code when Google will limit Watch Unlock. There will be no way to bypass this security decision, and the feature will only be re-enabled when you turn off Advanced Protection ModeSo it is clear that Google prefers maximal security of users' data before their convenience.
